GASing for a Morphagene

hmm I appear to be GASsing for a Morphagene. This seems ridiculous given the new Grain Stretch. Can someone who owns both dissuade me? I mean, doesn’t the grain stretch do the essentially the same function?

Can’t comment to great specificity as I’ve only had a few minutes w grain stretch, but the MG is geared toward both granular/microsound production, as well as iterative composition processes (walker’s videos are excellent to check for ideas and techniques). Im sure a MG custom unit could be built using the 301’s currently available units. However, grain stretch and MG do sound different, and the visual feedback on MG is a benefit to the workflow. Try one out and see if you need it? See if you need both? :+1:

The 301 does most of what the MG does, you just need to plan ahead.
That said, I have both and I don’t think either one’s going anywhere anytime soon. Probably doesn’t help the GAS at all…

Same. I have the 301, MG, and uClouds in my rig currently and happy to have them all. Also - there is talk of a future memory upgrade for the 301, so potentially less of an issue running big custom units if/when that happens.

I’ve got MG and Clouds and love them. All have different flavors, great to have them contribute to a mix in different ways. Sidenote: would this rumored future 301 memory upgrade be available to previous owners of a 301 or would this involve a new, upgraded unit? I’ve been circling the 301 for my rig and I might hold out if an upgrade is in the wings…

If and when it will be available all units will be upgradeable. The brain is on an user-swappable daughterboard.

Great, thanks for confirming. I thought I remembered seeing the reverse shot of the daughterboard. Good to know!

Back to the OP, the MG is more of a throwback to tape-based music concrete experimentation in Euro form first and granular second. It’s very hands-on and intuitive. Here’s new article that presents a nice historical analysis:

The story of early tape music, microsound, and a Eurorack resurrection

As far as I know, the board that could potentially upgrade the CPU does not exist at this time, and it sounds like Brian would likely have a fair amount of work to do before it could be dropped into the 301.

I.e. I don’t think it is imminent.

If something catastrophic happened to my 301, I think I’d replace it now rather than waiting, if that perspective helps you at all.

even if the 301 could be the morphagene, it isn’t the same. get the morphagene and let your 301 be itself.
